I started the original Topix thread because I was remembering all the good times we had at Ferguson School, and hoped to find a few people to share their own thoughts with me. I never dreamed that original thread would produce 4500 responses and reacquaint me with friends I hadn't talked to in 40 years. Out of three months of great discussions grew this website and now this message board. Anyone can drop by and browse, but if you want to post, you will have to register (see upper right). This will prevent a few problems we had on Topix but still allow us to continue getting together each day and remembering back. It seems like just yesterday we were all students at that big red brick schoolhouse. Let the good times roll ...

Welcome everybody. There are not a lot of rules on this forum, just as there were not on Topix. But there are a few you will want to be aware of.

    l. No post may be longer than 3000 characters. This is the same post limit Topix used.
    2. No one person may post more than three times a minute.
    3. Once a user name is registered and approved by Nancy, no one else may use that user name.
    4. Anyone is welcome to say anything within reason, but obscene, insulting or otherwise hurtful posts will be removed and the poster's registration cancelled.
    5. Please do not start new discussions. Nancy and I have thought about this, and we are agreed that we want one single thread. This helps all members of the group interact with each other on a daily basis. Some people will talk mainly about sports, some mostly about social activities and some mostly about ancient history, but we can all read each others' posts and gain from them. We don't need one thread just for sports, one for social activities and one for ancient history.
    6. No one person may post under multiple identities.

    Thanks. Welcome. Enjoy.

This reminds me of those basketball games where the score was close in the last minute and nobody wanted to shoot. But somebody has to shoot, so I guess I'll go ahead.

I love this. Once we get this rolling, it looks like it will be much better than the Topix board, and I really enjoyed that. I like the wider "screen" here and the fact that we don't have to worry about trolls and the Bronston gang trying to vandalize us. Wonder how many other high schools have their very own alumni message board? Plus we always know where to find this. We don't have to scroll down a long list of threads about desperate dateless women or high school students asking who knows what about some sweet innocent girl who then gets trashed for 35 posts. This has a lot more class.

Way to go, Nancy. Way to go, Coach.

    Thanks, Julia

A big "Thanks" to I Remember and Coach O--this is a treat to have our own Ferguson website. Like blondie9, I didn't attend Ferguson, but my daughter attended the elementary till it closed, and I have been a Ferguson resident for nearly 40 years so it's "home" to me. I'm looking forward to reading the posts of Ferguson people.

It doesn't appear there's too much activity on either place. Everyone must be out. I was hoping Sunshine would be on here. So what are you doing? Julia1 did you change your name from QVC gal?

He is a busy man....sometimes I'm amazed at just how small our world is. Did the two friends go to Ferguson? I just talked to my friend that I hoped could come, but she already has plans. She said she would try to come to the next meeting.

Does anyone on here know how to contact Brenda Flynn? I have tried to find someone that knows wherre she is and not having much luck. Is her brother Jimmy Flynn around here? I talked to my friend Laura Schafer today. She is recuperating from surgery and having a tough time. She told me she got a christmas card from Susie Sutton. Susie is living in South Carolina. Carol and Larry Stephens are going to try coming to visit this summer.

I don't know if Laura Schafer remembers me or not, but I certainly remember her. We started school at Ferguson in August 1966 and over the Labor Day weekend she withdrew and went to work full time. I had only had her in class a few weeks, but it was obvious she was really intelligent and really talented, especially in English, my subject. I'd grown up in a town where quitting school was unheard of. She was the first student I'd ever known to just quit, and especially since she was so intelligent and talented, I was shocked. I asked Mr. Higgins and Mr. Overbey and other teachers what somebody was going to do about it. They just shrugged and said "Nothing. Happens all the time." I could not accept that. So after practice that day I asked around and found out where she was working and went and looked her up. I tried to talk her into reconsidering and coming back to school. She was about as bewildered by me looking her up as I had been by her quitting. "You don't even know me," she said. "What do you care what I do?" I tried to explain how graduating from high school was important. She said she wasn't learning anything. I tried to explain that even if she just had to sit through her senior year, then she could go on to college or community college. She said she had other priorities right then, she needed money, and after three years in high school she thought it was pretty much a waste of time. I thanked her for being polite enough to listen to me,and asked her to at least think about it for a few days. As I left, she called back to me, and thanked me for caring enough to come talk to her. I never saw her again, but I always remembered that one of the best students I ever had quit at the beginning of her senior year. I sure hope she's enjoyed a good life. Julia, if she's your friend, next time you talk to her, tell her a teacher she probably doesn't even remember says hello and wishes her a quick recovery.

Coach O, are we ever going to find out who the girl is whose picture is posted on this website across from yours?

I do know that after Laura quit school, she went on to get her GED and on to Nursing school. I too quit school in my senior year, and got my Ged.. At the time I thought all that was important was to marry and see the world, which I did. I went on to get some college but never a degree. I do agree with you that an education is very important. Laura seems to have done well in her life, and so have I. We both have our share of health problems, but then who don't? I will be sure to mention your name to her. Once she has recuperated from her surgery, she may get on here also.

Looks like you can tarry just a few more minutes over lunch today. The group using the Somerset Library room before us will not finish until 1:15, so we can begin our meeting at 1:30 instead of 1:00 as previously announced. See you all then.

I'm at the library now. They've moved our meeting from Room C to The History Center, which is just past the main desk. Nice room. Two tables, four easy chairs and a fireplace.

It was nice to finally meet mostly everyone, and visit. Blondie9, you are next. It was discussed at the meeting, and unanimously decided, that the next meeting is at your house! There will only be around thirty - five of us.So it won't be a big deal!
Have you fainted yet? I was just kidding!

I agree that it was great to put faces to people I've been exchanging posts with for two or three months. I have additional photographs to mount on the website. And wasn't that History Center a classy place to meet? Wow. If we have our February meeting in there, they'll have the fireplace serviced and we can have it nice, bright and cheery. Now we have to get Redd Ryder, Redfox, Blondie9 and WasThere to our next meeting.
